How It Works

When water is supplied to the valve from the inlet, it flows through the needle valve into the main valve control chamber, and the outlet pressure is transmitted to the pilot valve via a conduit. When the outlet pressure exceeds the pilot valve spring-loaded setting, the pilot valve closes. The control chamber stops draining, causing the pressure inside the main valve control chamber to rise and the main valve to close; the outlet pressure ceases to rise. When the valve's outlet pressure drops to the pilot valve spring-loaded set pressure, the pilot valve opens, and the control chamber drains downstream. Since the drainage rate of the pilot valve system exceeds the inflow rate through the needle valve, the pressure in the main valve control chamber decreases. The inlet pressure causes the main valve to open. Under steady-state conditions, the inflow and outflow in the control chamber are equal, the main valve opening remains constant, and the outlet pressure remains stable.
